About Millstone Borough
Millstone was once known as Somerset Courthouse and served as Somerset County's county seat beginning in 1738. During the American Revolution, British forces destroyed the courthouse and jail in 1779. The borough's streets, historic buildings and river setting preserve an unusually concentrated piece of Somerset County history.
After the American victory at Princeton on January 3, 1777, General George Washington headquartered at the Van Doren house while Continental troops camped nearby before moving toward Pluckemin and Morristown.
